Contrasts Gallery was founded in Hong Kong in 1992 to exhibit the work of multi-disciplinary artists from around the world. The gallery's exhibition spaces in Shanghai do not adhere to the established model of European and American galleries; rather they follow Chinese traditions by not differing between art, design and the decorative arts. The gallery shows artworks from cutting edge artists and commissioned pieces from designers worldwide. Contrasts Gallery's mission is to show artists who explore Western and Eastern influences on art and design by creating a new aesthetic that defines the dynamic changes of today. Contrasts Gallery shows work by established and emerging international designers, who are invited to push boundaries of traditional Chinese art and craft techniques to create new works that reflect their experiences in China or some aspect of Chinese culture.
